SEO Mistake: Same Meta Descriptions
One of the things we see the most with non optimized web sites, is that web pages from the same domain have the same Meta Description tag. Each page is optimized depending on a number of issues, with the highest relevance for the content of the page. However, the META Description tag is the text that is visible to users when your site is appearing for a particular keyword.
This is why, it should be unique, descriptive and should tell the visitor what your page is about. It doesn't make any sense to leave all the META Descriptions the same, as each page of your site is different and covers different topics. Take the time to write something valuable that enhance the visitor to click on your link instead of other's link.
Here are some other tips to write nice and effective META Descriptions:
- Describe the content of your web page honestly, don't try to stuff it with keywords just to make it rank higher in the search engines. It's by far more important to write compelling meta descriptions, that will take traffic to your site, instead of keyword stuffed descriptions that nobody will click.
- Try to keep the meta descriptions under 165 - 160 characters. This is the character limit set by Google, so your text won't crop at the end with the "..."
- Use your keywords naturally in the copy of the meta descriptions tag. But make sure to use your targeted keyword at least once, this is important as the bolding done by the engines can make a big difference in visibility and CTR (Click Through Rate)
